Honeymoon Travel Planning

Wedding planning can be fun — but planning your honeymoon is more exciting! Whether you’re leaning towards a laid-back winery tour or thinking about a cruise to someplace warm, there are a lot of choices available to you!

Steven and I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We had a blast, and enjoyed the balmy warm weather very much. We planned for things to be more laid-back and relaxing — in fact, aside from our accommodations and flight plans, we only had three things in mind beforehand (snorkeling/scuba diving, a coastal island driving tour, and relaxing our first day there). The concierge at our hotel was a great source for ideas — both touristy as well as more “hidden” local attractions.

Wedding Honeymoon Travel Ideas

But, that being said, it is good to plan ahead. Even if you don’t book any activities, knowing your options will help you get the most enjoyment out of your honeymoon. And that’s where a travel agent is VERY helpful.

While we didn’t know her in time to get help planning our honeymoon, Josie Santiago, of A&J Travel (Manchester, MI + Ann Arbor, MI locations) is amazing! You can tell her what area you’d like to be, what types of activities you’re interested in, she’ll ask you some questions, and based on your responses, Josie will put together some options for you. Whether you just need hotel accommodations, or want hotel + flight + car rental — Josie can take care of it for you. In fact, I’m sure she’d be happy to help with not only honeymoon travel plans, but even with the wedding night hotel plans as well (just in case you don’t want anyone in the bridal party knowing where you are!). To contact Josie Santiago at A&J Travel, just call 734-428-8307. Tell her that Betsy Finn referred you!

Finally, I wanted to give you some ideas for your honeymoon (besides the unmentionable and obvious!). Whether you’re staying in the States or traveling abroad, these tips will help you make the most of your getaway.

Honeymoon Travel Tips

  • Leave a day to relax - After all the wedding stress and excitement, you deserve a day off. So, rejuvenate yourselves by taking things easy (at least for a day). Besides, do you really want to be stressing about about not being packed for the honeymoon during the wedding reception? Of course not! So, instead of leaving that night for the airport — leave the next day, or even the day following!
  • Don’t overplan - Yes, it’s extremely tempting to sign up for each and every activity you see. But, make sure to leave some free time. Some of my favorite honeymoon memories are from one our “spur of the moment” excursions to see a hidden waterfall on Oahu.
  • Splurge! - Ok, so this doesn’t give you license to go completely overboard, but it is your honeymoon. Relax, enjoy yourself, and do a little something extra that you normally wouldn’t indulge in. After all, your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion — so go get that massage, take your dream sailboat cruise, or even just go out for a nice fancy dinner as “married folks.”
  • Ask the Locals - while tourbooks and websites are a great source of information for things to do, sometimes the best restaurants or parks are “off the beaten path.” We like to ask the hotel attendant when we’re checking in about their favorite restaurants or places; we’ve experienced some AMAZING cuisine that we never would have stumbled across otherwise.
  • Spend time together - Yes, this one should go without saying. But sometimes you might want to each do something different (especially on a cruise). It’s ok to split up, but just remember why you’re on vacation in the first place — you want to come back from your honeymoon with wonderful memories to share with each other. So relax, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the beginning of a long and fruitful marriage!
