Senior Projects

Every year, Greenhills High School offers a neat opportunity for the current senior class — Senior Projects! The last three weeks of the semester, students can choose to work on a Senior Project of their choosing — instead of going to classes. Of course, the projects require a proposal and a faculty sponsor, and culminate with presentations on Senior Project Day.

It’s all very interesting — and the project is limited only by each senior’s imagination! I remember cooking internships, art exhibitions, car modifications, and more. It’s really interesting to see the process that each senior went through — these projects are more than just a way to fill the last three weeks of school; they become a tool for self-exploration and the pursuit of knowledge.

This year, I got the opportunity to mentor Ankur, a graduating senior. He has together a very interesting and compelling set of images, relating images created in New York to portraits of people and friends. It was great to see the creativity and learn about Ankur’s conceptualization of the project. I had fun giving suggestions on the theoretical concepts behind the images, and am looking forward to seeing the final presentation!

This year, Senior Project Day will take place on June 1st, 2008 at Greenhills School. There are a lot of great presentations, and it will be fun to see!

June 20, 2008 UPDATE:
Senior Project Day, as always, was a success. Due to a scheduling conflict, I wasn’t able to go — but I heard many good reports and I’m sad to have missed it!!

Here’s a quote from Greenhills’ School news story regarding the 2008 Senior Projects:

The other part of my project I conducted in and around Greenhills, and it consists of portraits of my friends. To help with this and the final presentation, I met with Greenhills alum Betsy Finn, also a professional photographer, who works in Dexter, Michigan. In the end, I found that my understanding of each photo was determined by my emotional proximity to the subject, just as meaning may form for any viewer. — Ankur
