Photojournalistic & Traditional Photography - What’s the Difference?
When you’re choosing a photographer for your wedding, you’ll notice that a lot of articles and pamphlets tell you how important it is to find out whether the photographer’s style of photography is photojournalistic or traditional. You probably know it’s good to research the style of photography you’re interested in, but maybe you’re thinking, “Ok, so what exactly is the difference between photojournalism and traditional wedding photography?”
Traditional photography is a little easier to define, so let’s start there. Chances are when you think of traditional photography you’ll think of your parents’ wedding albums – I know I did! But there’s more to it than that. Traditional wedding photographers take an active role in directing your wedding day – you will likely be asked to step aside for the posed shot before the actual thing, and the photographer will focus on creating the “timeless” family portraits that we expect to see in most wedding albums.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have photojournalistic photography. For these photographers, their goal is to capture the essence of your wedding day, the emotions you experience throughout the ceremony and reception. Rather than directing your day to create memories for you, photojournalistic photography unobtrusively captures the fleeting moments that you will be experiencing.
Even though I’ve been already married for a little over six months (time flies!), I am already glad that we chose a photographer that didn’t direct our every move, but let us enjoy our day. I admit, we enjoy having the “traditional” church group shots and other posed images, but we also love the candid moments captured by our photographer. My experience as a bride has reinforced the way I photograph weddings – a blend of traditional and photojournalistic styles that is just right!
At Betsy’s Photography we want to make sure that the majority of your wedding day is YOURS. While it’s important to provide some direction so you look your best for the formal pictures and the key “events,” we’d like to let you relax and enjoy yourself for the rest of your day – so we step back and let you be you! We’ll make sure you have the all-important family group portraits if you want them, but more importantly, our job is to listen to you! No matter what happens, I’ll be there to make sure you’re able to enjoy yourselves – I want your wedding day to be as wonderful and memorable as mine was!
