Michigan Airshow + WWII Reenactment

This weekend I went and stopped by the Airshow (Yankee Air Museum’s Thunder Over Michigan). We didn’t stay as long as initially planned (the rainclouds started looking awfully foreboding), but still had a great time. One of the events we spent the most time at was the WWII ground battle reenactment.

And, since I couldn’t make a post about the Airshow without sharing at least one image of an airplane… here’s one for you. The pilot’s flying skills were very impressive to watch… an image really can’t do them justice. You’d need sound, and video… but being there in person would be most effective.

If you’re free next year for the Thunder Over Michigan Airshow, make sure to add this to your list of summer activities. It’s a great way to experience history, and see some amazing planes and vehicles.

To Betsy’s Photography, The picture of the two ww2 re-enactors to my surprise, are my son and myself at last years’ “Thunder Over Michigan” Air Show . The event was fantastic, and truly was an honor to participate. The group that I and my son belong to is the 704th tank destroyer battalion( an actual tank destroyer battalion from the second world war). The 704th tank destroyer re-enactment originates out of Royal Oak,Mich.

The group has been active with the Michigan Honor Flight, which if you were not aware, performs fundraising and volunteer work for the oppurtunity to send ww2 veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the world war 2 memorial. I have been blessed to be part of this group. I have met many ww2 veterans, and I hold all of them with the highest respect that one could possibly imagine. There stories of personal experience and heroism, although none of them would ever admit to the heroism, they would only say that,”I was just doing my job”.

The photo means alot to me in that, the photo’s that were taken never made there way to the group, so I guess that the photo would be my only souvenir of the event. Thank you very much for making my day!

Robert, thank you so much for taking the time to write about this! It is one thing to be on the sidelines photographing, but another to hear the first person perspective.

Thank you for all that you (and your division) do. I am honored that my photographs were able to provide you with a souvenir/memory from the reenactment.
